Hydroponic Ebb & Flow Trays

The Challenge

A Dutch hydroponics company needed to manufacture exceptionally large ebb-and-flow growing trays — 6000 x 2000mm — for commercial greenhouse operations. These trays needed precise flatness, consistent wall thickness, and integrated drainage channels. No standard thermoforming machine on the market could handle this forming area.

The Solution: PF1-X-6520

Machinecraft built a custom PF1-X-6520 — one of the largest single-station vacuum forming machines in the world. The machine was engineered from scratch to handle the extreme sheet dimensions while maintaining the precision required for agricultural applications.

Key Technical Specifications

The Outcome

The PF1-X-6520 enabled production of the largest thermoformed hydroponic trays in the market. The precision forming achieved the flatness tolerances required for even water distribution in ebb-and-flow systems, critical for consistent crop growth in commercial greenhouse operations. The adjustable forming area (min 1200 x 4700mm to max 1900 x 6400mm) allows the same machine to produce different tray sizes without tooling changes.
